Artist’s Biography/Statement

Western Pleasure

I have a firm belief that an artist must have a complete and utter passion for their subject. For me, that passion is the animal world. Depicting the animals with whom I share my life, those I meet in passing, and others that I simply admire from afar is what fuels my artistic drive. I have spent my life in British Columbia so I have an affinity for the animals, both wild and domesticated, that enrich this place. My travels abroad have served to broaden my scope. I am compelled by an ongoing quest to portray the intimate connection I feel for the creatures I encounter.

United by one passion, the dual sides of my nature are reflected by the two media in which I work. My whimsical, sometimes-playful self shines through when I paint with dye on silk, embracing lively colours, loose forms and the medium’s somewhat unpredictable nature. When I turn my hand to coloured pencil, the emphasis on control, precision and finely-wrought detail. My affinity for coloured pencil spans more than 30 years and I never tire of it as I continue to learn and to explore the possibilities it offers. Working in coloured pencil has a meditative quality that allows me to disconnect from the real world and immerse myself in the creative process. In all my art-making, my goal is embrace the character of my subject, discover the essence of its nature, capture both the fundamentals and subtleties of its form, and portray the spark of its personality.

A full-time artist, I work from my home studio, Cat & Mouse Designs, in Langley, BC and I welcome animal portrait commissions.
