Brita - A Portrait

Gordon is a (mostly) self-taught artist. He learned to draw in May 1987 while sailing in the Bahamas and has been drawing ever since. He began using colour pencil in 1989 and began exhibiting his work in 1992. From then until 1998 he actively participated in local art competitions and exhibits where his work routinely won awards including “Viewer’s Choice”. In April 1995 Gordon had a joint exhibit with another colour pencil artist, at which time he released his first limited edition reproductions. In November 1996 Gordon had a solo exhibit to coincide with the release of three new limited edition reproductions. Two more solo exhibits were held in August 2000 and in April 2002. In April 2004 and January 2005 Gordon exhibited at Rothwell Gallery.

Gordon has been very active in the local arts community as well. He served on the executive of Arteast from 1994 to 1997, during which time he was responsible for the creation of the Gloucester Municipal Gallery and the Visual Arts Centre, Orleans. He served as President of the VACO for its first year of operations. From late 1997 until amalgamation Gordon sat on the Gloucester Arts Board, an advisory board to City Council. After amalgamation he served on the Gloucester Arts Council (now Arts Ottawa East) until 2008 as a member of the Advocacy Committee where he was a driving force behind the creation of the Shenkman Arts Centre.

Gordon has taught drawing and art to all ages of students throughout Ottawa since 1995. Additionally, Gordon is working to create the Colour Pencil Society of Canada, a national organization devoted to increasing the awareness and acceptance of coloured pencil as a fine art medium.

Currently Gordon has 9 reproductions available. He works almost exclusively in colour pencil. His works, both originals and reproductions, can be found in collections across North America, Japan and the Philippines. Reproductions of Gordon’s work are available at several local galleries. He is currently preparing an exhibit of all new work.
