Grandma

I feel that I need to paint. That it’s a part of my self expression. I’m inspired more to convey positive feelings, like joy, peace and tranquility.

I’m very much inspired by the beauty of nature. Solving the puzzle of how to breath life into a painting is truly fascinating. Starting with a good composition; I think that colours, values, shapes, lines and textures all play an important role in a successful painting. I’m also very conscious of light and shadow. I love working with pastels because I can get my fingers right in there and touch and feel my paintings.

Before I begin a painting I often move my fingers across the blank canvas imagining that the painting is already there and that i just need to coax it to the surface. I also like to working with coloured pencils, graphite and watercolour. I’d love to one day learn oils as well.

Along with landscapes and florals, I really enjoy doing portraits. For me, a portrait is a success when I can feel their personality and spirit. When I can see them looking back at me. I mainly work in coloured pencil and graphite, but would really like to complete some in pastels.

The most influential artist for me (so far) would have to be Zolton Szabo. Although I haven’t taken any workshops from Daniel Greene and Richard McKinnley; I feel very much influenced by what I’ve learned from them through research on the internet.

My goal is to keep learning how create pieces that capture life and emotion, while exploring new mediums and materials.
